That is huge news. Sports betting would be massive in Florida. Sports betting should be legal in all 50 states. What more do the states have see when DraftKings Sportsbook is on billboards at Major League parks and now the NFL is partnering with sportsbooks.

Too bad "woke sports" will bankrupt all these leagues by the time sports betting becomes mainstream.

Do they even run the gambling though? Don't they basically just farm that shit out to industry people? That's what the casinos in CT basically do.

Good article in today’s sun sentinel. They are pretty optimistic about this (newspaper leans left)

we can bet on sports at stadiums, arenas, casinos, and parimutuals

roulette and craps are the hard rock.

The announcement could come as early as today

sports gambling could happen as early as fall

(forgive me if I am incorrect about anything about this. I’m pretty tired this morning and was having 2 different conversations with 2 different people while reading the article)

hard rock only has card games and slots.

I am a craps player and I could never see the hard rock give 5x odds or anything like that.

my kids go to camp not too far from the hard rock and for years I said I was gonna take the day off and play all day.

Still haven’t had a chance yet

US officials approve Florida-Seminole sports betting deal

Associated Press
August 6, 2021

TALLAHASSEE – Federal officials approved a deal Friday that will allow the Seminole Tribe to operate sports betting and add roulette and craps to its seven Florida casinos, with the state potentially receiving $20 billion over the next 30 years.

Gov. Ron DeSantis had worked out the gambling compact with the tribe this past spring, and it was later approved by the Republican-controlled Florida House and Senate. The deal needed final approved from the U.S. Department of the Interior, which oversees tribal gambling operations.

“The final approval of this historic gaming compact is a big deal for the State of Florida,” DeSantis said in a statement. “This mutually-beneficial agreement will grow our economy, expand tourism and recreation and provide billions in new revenue to benefit Floridians.”

Officials said the agreement will generate an estimated $6 billion through 2030. The Tribe is not currently making any revenue payments to the state.

“Today is a great day for the people of Florida, who will benefit not only from a $2.5 billion revenue sharing guarantee over five years, but also from statewide sports betting and new casino games that will roll out this fall and mean more jobs for Floridians and more money invested in this state,” Seminole Tribe of Florida Chairman Marcellus Osceola Jr. said in a statement.

Under the agreement, the Seminoles could begin sports betting Oct. 15 and sports wagering at horse tracks, jai alai frontons and former dog tracks for a share of the income. Online sports betting operated by the tribe also will be allowed.

Democrats opposing the deal have argued that the compact violates Amendment 3 passed by Florida voters in 2018. The amendment to the state constitution prevents the expansion of gambling outside of tribal lands without voter approval.

In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal law that barred states from authorizing sports betting. Florida’s original compact with the Seminoles gave the tribe exclusive rights to slot machines and blackjack. In exchange, the tribe paid the state several billion dollars. Payments stopped in 2019.

Sports betting in Florida: Feds allow DeSantis’ gaming compact with Seminole Tribe to move forward

WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — A 30-year compact reached between Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Seminole Tribe of Florida earlier this year to bring sports betting and expanded table games to the state won't be blocked by the federal government.

The United States Department of Interior chose to take no action to either approve or disapprove of the compact and instead let the 45-day window expire, effectively giving the deal the green light.

But the deal isn't moving forward without concerns.

"The Department has concerns regarding the inclusion of provisions relating to jurisdiction over tort claims and mandatory vendor contracts. We also believe it is important that the Department address the provisions relating to internet gaming activities and revenue sharing," the Department wrote in a letter to the Seminole Tribe.

Under the deal, sports betting, exclusively through the Tribe, on professional and collegiate sports will be legal in Florida.

"Such wagering is deemed to be exclusively conducted by the Tribe at the location of the servers that process such wagering activity of the Tribe's Indian lands," the Department wrote. It added that the player placing bets must also be located within the state of Florida.

According to a letter sent to the Tribe, no proposition bets on collegiate sports will be allowed. The compact also allows the Tribed to open three additional facilities on its Hollywood Reservation

"The Department commends the Tribe's extraordinary accomplishments in its gaming endeavors and wishes the Tribe continued success," the Department wrote.

However, craps and roulette can be added at the tribe’s casinos.

In exchange for the compact, the state gets a guarantee of $2.5 billion over the next five years and $6 billion by the year 2030.

“The final approval of this historic gaming compact is a big deal for the State of Florida,” DeSantis said. “This mutually beneficial agreement will grow our economy, expand tourism and recreation and provide billions in new revenue to benefit Floridians."

“Today is a great day for the people of Florida, who will benefit not only from a $2.5 billion revenue-sharing guarantee over five years, but also from statewide sports betting and new casino games that will roll out this fall and mean more jobs for Floridians and more money invested in this state,” Marcellus Osceola Jr., Chairman of the Seminole Tribe of Florida added.

Anti-gambling groups say placing sports bets through smartphones could occur off tribal land even if the computer servers processing them were housed on tribal land. That, they argue, would still be a violation of federal law.

Lawyers who specialize in this sort of thing say the compact might also violate Amendment Three. It was passed by voters in 2018, giving Florida citizens the right to decide issues related to gambling that occurs off tribal land.

DeSantis has previously said the state and the Seminole Tribe are prepared to vigorously defend the agreement in court.
